The French call the north half of this island Saint Martin, and the Dutch call the south half Sint Maarten, though the English pronunciation now is the more prevalent. Since Columbus first saw and named this island five hundred years ago on the day of St. Martin’s feast, many European nations have laid claim, bringing slavery and the sugar plantations with them, but the French and Dutch finally came to co-own the island in the 1600s. Tourism now is the dominant industry, thanks to the advent of commercial air travel in recent decades. The island of St. Barths, and many other islands in the vicinity, can be visited in short, fun trips by catamaran, where you can stop, swim and look with absolute clarity at the amazing array of beautiful fish along the way. The resorts and golf courses of St. Martin are among the finest in the world, and will cater to your every whim.
